Ever wondered how the world’s elite athletes get to the top of their game and become the best of the best? It’s a combination of factors, ranging from discipline to drive to having access to world class facilities.

The latter can be found at the University of East London, one of the top places to train for high performance athletes. Learn how you can get involved here —and sign up to become the next generation of UK world class athletes.

UEL is a large, modern university with campuses and sports facilities to match. Our commitment to sport is reflected in our aim to become the number-one university for sport in London by 2015. We are well on our way to achieving that goal, evident by a massive jump of 51 places in the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league table in the last two years, and by winning the ‘Most Improved University’ accolade at the BUCS 2010–2011 Awards ceremony. In accordance with this UEL has made a significant investment in sports scholarships for high-performing athletes.

The High-Performance Sport Programme at the University of East London is one of the most attractive in the UK and enables elite athletes to balance study with their sporting ambitions by offering our elite athletes world-class facilities, comprehensive support and financial scholarships and bursaries.

Our current sports scholars include Olympians, Paralympians and senior internationals who represent UEL at national and international university competitions. In 2012, three of our current scholars, Ali Jawad (powerlifting), Gemma Gibbons (judo) and Sophie Cox (judo), were chosen to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
